Since Ancient Greece, the owl has symbolized wisdom, famously accompanying Athena, the Goddess of wisdom herself. Here's why the owl is associated with Athena and wisdom:
Athena's Symbol:
The owl is one of Athena's most recognized symbols, frequently depicted with her in art and mythology.
Night Vision:
Owls' exceptional night vision was interpreted as a metaphor for Athena's ability to see beyond the surface and discern truth.
Strategic Prowess:
Athena's association with strategic thinking and war further solidified the owl's role as a symbol of wisdom and discernment.
Wisdom and Knowledge:
The owl's nocturnal lifestyle and association with the night were seen as representing the pursuit of knowledge and intellectual insight.
In Athens:
The owl was also the national mascot of the Athenians and appeared on their coinage, reflecting the city's reputation for wisdom and intellectual prowess.
Roman Equivalent:
